It was rivalry week at Prince George’s community college, and the Owls were getting ready to take on their visiting rivals in the Anne Arundel RiverHawks.

The lady owls were having a slow start to their season, but over the last couple of games they have been getting back to their winning ways. Their last win was against Pennsylvania Highlands Community College where they won 103 to 30. The Friday night against rival Anne Arundel their success continued. The lady owls started the game firing on all cylinders and seemed to have found their recipe for success.

All game long the lady owls played very tight defense against the RiverHawks, which subsequently turned into offense for them. One of the players that really stood out was freshman Dominique Smith who led the owls at the half in points with 11.

“Defense will create offense” head coach Tianna Harris said when I spoke with her after the game.

That was the game plan they wanted to establish during the game and it worked to perfection. The final score of the women’s game was 84 to 48.

Next it was time for the men to play. They hold currently a record of 7-1 coming off an 81 to 71 victory over Pennsylvania Highlands Community College.

This game was very fast paced, and close scoring from start to finish. This was their first divisional game, and their third conference game of the season. The final score of the game was 82-63.

Some of the players that had really good games were Kenneth Ford, Alex Morales and Jeremy Steadman. Ford led the team in total points for the night with 16, Steadman had 13 and Morales had 12.

Even though the owls won the game by a score of 82-63, there was still one thing that they struggled on during the game.

“Free-throws we have got to figure out a way to hit some free-throws and we work on them in practice. Myself and the staff were formulating some ideas on how to make free-throws better, but if we can make some free – throws games won’t be as tight, and we will figure that out” said coach Johnson after the game.

The owls shot 47.6% from free-throw range, and committed 20 turnovers. That’s just three less of what their opponents had on the game. So these are definitely two areas in which the owls will look to improve on in the coming weeks.
