Black athletes and marijuana

This has been an issue that has been on my mind for a long time. The reason why i barely even bring it up is to avoid a big debate or argument, but i fee like something has to be said. So if you continue to read this you give me permission to be REAL with you.

For a long time now marijuana has been a big topic of discussion. Mainly a topic that has been popular in the black community. It has affected not just black athletes and black folks in our communities, but also has the minds of our younger generation. The reason it has become so popular according to some of my sources is because of the feeling that some athletes and ordinary people experience when smoking it and it also is good for medical reasons which I completely understand.

However there are certain laws in certain organizations that prohibit it. For example the NFL has a strict substance abuse policy that lays out certain rules about using drugs. Yet still some athletes choose to participate in illegal drug use that is costing them millions of dollars. I just don’t understand why an athlete would allow some weed to hinder the quality of life that they are privileged to be living in.

Every single time I turn my head I hear about athlete after athlete being either suspended or terminated by a franchise over some marijuana use. Not only that, but every time I hear about it its always a BLACK athlete. Then people want to ask “Whats the big deal BWill its just a little weed?” Are you kidding me bro? Really! It’s a big deal because the NFL said it is.

If your employer aka the person or people that gives you money to provide a life for you and your family tells you to not do something because its prohibited. Why would you go against the rules and risk being becoming unemployed? I sure wouldn’t because its ignorant and I enjoy staying employed. People have to understand that with a job comes rules and regulations, and you must adhere to them. Otherwise you will face the consequences from your employer which could lead to your termination!

Please understand that I’m  coming down on the brothers like this because i am ticked off at the fact that people continue to look at black folks like we aren’t important and like were not people. I want to see all black folks be successful in whatever it is they want to do. That’s why black athletes have to start making better decisions because it is affecting their income and their families. Also it’s setting a bad example for the young black athletes growing up in urban communities. If they see some of these athletes that they look up to doing this type of stuff then their going to think it’s ok. Which is a huge problem for their upbringing.

I am in no way shape or form judging these athletes I enjoy watching them just like everyone else. All I’m saying is that in order for you to enjoy the benefits of being a professional athlete you have to follow the rules!
