The Philadelphia Eagles have climbed to the top of the NFL mountain and have finally captured pro football’s greatest prize, after defeating the New England Patriots 41 to 33 in Super Bowl 52.
After going without a championship for 56 years, the Eagles can finally say that they are super bowl champions for the first time in franchise history. This was an exciting game from start to finish with both offenses putting up big numbers. Thanks to the arm of Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles who threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns, the city of brotherly love is feeling the love once again. Foles also caught a touchdown pass on a trick play in the second quarter, after the Patriots on their previous offensive possession tried a similar play that ended in an incompletion off the finger tips of Tom Brady.
Leading up to the game football fanatics and analyst were talking about how much the running game will be a big factor for the Eagles. If they were going to sustain long offensive possessions to keep Brady and the Patriots offense on the sideline, they needed to run the ball and run it effectively.
They did just that with former Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount who won his last two Super Bowl rings with the Patriots. Jay Ajayi who they acquired in a trade with the Miami Dolphins and rookie Corey Clement. Blount had 14 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown, and Clement had four catches for 100 yards receiving and a touchdown.
Now at the half the Eagles were up 22-12, but we all know that you can never count out Tom Brady. The Patriots would go on to score 21 points in the second half.
However, the Eagles offense kept “staying aggressive” as head coach Doug Pederson said post game.
So many times over the years other teams would take their foot off the gas against the Patriots, but Pederson is a wise student of the game and knew that any slight let up could have possibly led to a another come from behind victory for the Patriots.
The Eagles defense all season long has been making plays, and they needed another big play late in the fourth quarter when Brady had the ball with two minutes and change left on the clock. On 2nd & 2 with 2:16 left on the clock defensive lineman Brandon Graham strip sacked Brady causing a fumble and rookie defensive end Nick Barnett recovered giving the ball back to the Eagles.
Then to put the game on ice Jake Elliot would kick a 46 yard field goal to seal the fate of the Patriots, and your new Super Bowl champions the Philadelphia Eagles.
