Week 1 has come and gone for the Redskins after they lose 30-17 to their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles. In the last five meetings the Redskins have come out the victor, but on Sunday the outcome told a different story.
The Eagles struck first with a long touchdown pass from QB Carson Wentz to WR Nelson Agholor giving them an early 7-0 lead. Shortly after that Wentz would find newly acquired RB LeGarrette Blount for a 1 yard touchdown pass.
The Redskins would struggle early offensively, but got a spark from veteran DE Ryan Kerrigan who intercepted a pass from Carson Wentz, and ran it in for six.
From that point on the Redskins defense showed big play ability, but struggled at times to get off the field on third down.
However, they managed to keep the Eagles out of the end zone for most of the second quarter. The Eagles would have to settle for field goals to regain the lead right before halftime.
During the second half the Redskins continued to struggle on offense, and missed several opportunities to regain the lead.
“Obviously we didn’t play well enough today to come out with a win, so in that sense we weren’t ready, but we did all we could to be ready, but in the moment the plays just weren’t made” said Cousins
Yesterdays outcome looked very reminiscent of last seasons slow start for the Redskins, and the fans took right to social media and the parking lot to express their displeasure. The final score was 30-17.
Next week they face another challenge whom they are very familiar with.
The team will be heading to the West Coast to face former offensive coordinator and now head coach of the Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay, and his new team who beat the Indianapolis Colts 46-9.
McVay got the head coaching nod this past offseason after spending three seasons with the Redskins. He is now the youngest head coach in NFL history at age 31.
With the way his new team looks, it’s going to be interesting to see how the Redskins stack up against a Rams team led by a man who knows them very well.
