This off-season there have been a lot of retirements happening. From Troy Polamalu, Patrick Willis, Ike Taylor etc. On yesterday a well-respected veteran and cornerstone of the 49ers franchise called it a career. The great Justin Smith calls it a career after 14 NFL seasons. He has been of the most dominant and well seasoned defensive players that I have ever seen.
The way he dominated at the line of scrimmage left me in awe every time I saw him play. He was a big presence on the field and off the field. If I had to put him on a list of the top rated defensive players ever he would definitely be near the top of the list.
He is a NFC Champion and appeared in one Superbowl as a member of the 49ers back in 2012. Over the course of his career he has recorded 880 tackles, 87 Quarterback sacks, 17 forced fumbles and 3 interceptions. So its safe to say that he was very productive. Not only did he have great career numbers, but he has also appeared on the NFL top 100 three times.
There will never be another one like him. So my hats off to “The Cowboy” as he rides into the sunset of a great NFL career.
